Jimmy Dove (Jeff Bridges) is a master on the Boston Bomb Squad, his is the toughest job as he is always called on for the riskiest assignments. After his marriage to Kate (Suzy Amis), he decides to drop out of active duty and ends up working as an instructor. When his best friend on the squad is killed, he suspects an old friend Ryan Gaerity (Tommy Lee Jones) who has recently escaped from prison. It becomes personal for both Jimmy and Ryan as they both have something to prove. In this case Jimmy must put forth his best skills, skills that he learned from Gaerity, in order to stop him from harming Jimmy's family and Jimmy himself in a plot for revenge.
