Biopic film about Lou Gehrig (Gary Cooper), the first baseman for the New York Yankees who suffered from a crippling and incurable disease. Pegged as a top ballplayer even while a student at Columbia University, Gehrig is scouted by the hometown Yankees and is soon signed to the team. Gehrig becomes an overnight sensation on the baseball diamond and becomes the captain of the team, leading them to several world championships. With the loving presence of his devoted wife Eleanor (Teresa Wright), Lou brings his trademark dedication to the fans, the game, and his team. Lou never misses a game in all his seasons until he suddenly falls ill with a mysterious disease that will eventually be named for him. As his body began to fail him, Gehrig has to say good-bye to the fans that idolized him and to the sport he loves so dearly.
