Navin (Steve Martin) is a simple and comically naive man whose world is shaken when he learns that he is adopted, and is not, in fact, black like the rest of his family. After hearing an easy listening station on the radio, he feels driven to learn more about his native culture, and sets out to find more white people, choosing St. Louis as his destination. The problem is, Navin is a complete imbecile, and one person after another take advantage of his trusting nature. He is shot at, By chance, a stupidly simple invention makes him rich and wins him the love of a beautiful woman (Bernadette Peters). This apparent happy ending is short-lived, however, as our idiot hero's life gets still more complicated.
