We Sold Your Pre-Order of the Limited Edition of The Dark Knight.
Sunday I saw The Dark Knight on the shelves two days early at a local Meijers. I didn't pick it up because I've had my pre-order through Best Buy for quite some time now. I ordered the Limited Edition Blu-Ray that comes with the Bat Pod. Regretfully I chose in-store pickup.Today I went to Best Buy to pick up my copy that was said to be waiting for me from the confirmation email I had received earlier. After about 10 minutes of standing in line, its was finally my time. But while standing there, I started to get a bad feeling. There were 2 stacks of DVD's and standard Blu-Rays. No Bat Bod edition. And in the bins where they are sorted by last name, there wasn't anything bigger than a DVD inside. But this doesn't mean anything, they just have them located out of sight.
I get up there and hand them my paperwork. She asks for ID, and the credit card. She then goes to the back table to pick up the standard Blu-Ray version. I speak up, and tell her that its not the right version. She then begins to tell me that its the Blu-Ray version. Yes it is, but its not the version I ordered. I had to describe what it was because she didn't understand what I was talking about. She then proceeds to help the lady that she had been helping earlier.
After about 10 minutes, she finally calls up the manager on duty. She talks in a soft voice to him, and then he gets on his walkie, and asks if the Batman figure or Joker figure come free with pre-order. I interrupt him, and tell him that not the issue. He then proceeds to check me out, and again, goes to the back table to grab a standard Blu-Ray version. I tell him that its not the version I preordered. Same as before, he also begins to tell me that its the Blu-Ray version. I have to point out that there is a $20 different difference from the price on the receipt to the standard version.
He then walks away to check the center display, where I had already looked, and unsuccessfully found the Bat Pod. After 2 minutes of looking, he comes back and tells me that they are sold out. What? How can you be out of something that I preordered? I was told it was waiting for me. Oh, well, those emails are automatically sent out no matter what the status is. And with .com orders, there are so many orders the numbers get messed up. So you're telling me that you've already charged me, for a product that you do not have? Well, yes, but we can refund some of your money back and you can buy the standard version. Nope, give me all my money back, I'll pick it up somewhere else.
So after 45 minutes in line, I was told that they sold my pre-order. What the point of the pre-order system if it doesn't work? I usually pass pre-orders off as a joke, because the pre-orders are just for the standard versions to where they will have hundreds of copies of the item. But I knew that this would be rare, and the stores wouldn't be getting many copies of it, so I preordered it to guarantee my item. I was totally wrong. So in fact I was right about pre-orders, they are a joke, and a scam. I used to think they used the numbers of pre-orders to judge how many copies that need to be sent to the stores. Now I know that its to just get your money, and not guarantee a product for it.
This does have a somewhat happy story. I was able to go across the street to Target and pick up the Bat Pod edition of the movie. Although, I just about gave up while I was there. But noticed it was in with the TV box sets.
So lesson be learned. If you pre-order anything, do it from an online retailer who only ships you an item, and has no in store pickup. Because with your product in the store, there is no guarantee that they will hold on to it, even if its already paid for.
